Stop & Go
Curated by Francesco Bonami
Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin (Italy)
23 October 2007 - 6 January 2008

Following the great multi-venue exhibition of selected works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection in 2005 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Foundation, this exhibition gives an insight into the development of the Collection. The aim is to show the direction the Collection has taken and to update the public on the role film and video have within this important body of works, already considered a fundamental component in the history of contemporary art.

Stop & Go. New Video Works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection, curated by Francesco Bonami, showcases a selection some of the most highly acclaimed video works currently on the art scene, by artists from all over the world.

The choice of works has been centred around the concept of movement and space, reflected both mentally and physically in films such as Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait by artists Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno or the body movements of dancer Trisha Brown in the hypnotic film by Babette Mangolte. A special section will be dedicated to Marine Hugonnier’s Trilogy, co produced by the Philadelphia Museum of Art (where it was presented from April to July 2007), the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and the Kunsthalle in Bern (where it will be screened from October to December 2007).

Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo has always taken particular interest in video and film as a means of artistic expression, paying particular attention to the innovative work of emerging artists over the years, often anticipating the major success that they would go on to enjoy as today’s new generation. An important aim of the exhibition is, in fact, to present and promote the work of new artists, names to look out for more on the international art scene in years to come.

“Showing the video section of the Collection today, means revealing the sense of a long term project, of which up to now only some excerpts have been seen, it means showing the evolution, changes, the story of a contemporary art collection” confirms Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, director of the art foundation that bears her name.

The selected works approach a wide variety of themes and techniques, featuring animation, the theme of identity, new technologies, interpersonal relationships, icons and stereotypes of today’s society.

The video works on show were produced from the end of the nineties up to today.
