Villa Remmert, Ciriè (Italy)
7 October 2006 - 14 January 2007

Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo opens its program in the spaces of Villa Remmert in Ciriè, with an educational project consisting in an introduction to images. The space, which the City of Ciriè recently entrusted to the Foundation, will be dedicated to learning and educational projects. With exhibitions, seminars, conferences, meetings and workshops, the Foundation will try to provide the young and less young public with adequate tools for approaching the art of our time.
The first project is a review exhibition entitled: Appunti. Arte contemporanea dal dopoguerra alla fine del secolo. It includes four shows to be held over two years, each of them designed to guide visitors through the artistic and historical scene of the last 50 years. While the event program in the venues of Turin and Guarene d'Alba focuses on the most extreme contemporary art, in Villa Remmert Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo aims at offering a reconstruction of the part of contemporary artistic production that is already treated as historical. Only by looking at the past can we confront the current art world and imagine its future. The art of our time is clearly the result of an evolution that has taken the shape of the different historical contexts that have prevailed over time, very often becoming a mirror of these. If you go back over our history since 1948 you will see that art, like any other discipline, can be read more clearly if you know its history and evolution.
Artists, words, images from 1948 to 1959 form the first exhibition in the series, which focuses on the 1950s decade, trying to reconstruct it through a group of works that have changed the visual language of those years. The paintings and sculptures of this first exhibition appear to visitors surrounded by the words of the artists, and the photographs that show them while they are busy working, or posing next to their creations. Profiles of the works, of their authors, and of artist groups, make up a general chronology that reconstructs the main events of the decade - current topics, society, science and culture, but also music and documentary movies, these are the materials that have been chosen to inform visitors and try to give them the zeitgeist as intact as possible.
The communicative approach of the exhibition, based on a careful research of works and sources, is reinforced by a series of four lectures, intended as occasions for further exploration and as encounters with the public. The lectures will use images and readings to recreate the artistic and cultural milieu of the 1950s.
