Visioni a catena. Famiglia, Politica e Religione nell’ultima generazione di Arte Italiana
Curated by Francesco Bonami
20 April 2001

As a part of “Italy in Japan 2001”, the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l’Arte presents an exhibition entitled Chain of visions: Family, Politics and Religion in latest generation of Italian Art at the Hara Museum of Tokyo, from 19th April to 1st July 2001. The exhibition, which presents 12 Italian artists, is officially included in the list of events of “Italy in Japan 2001”.

The show is curated by Francesco Bonami, Artistic Director of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l’Arte and Manilow Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

The aim of the exhibition is to show how both Italian and Japanese cultures and art are going through a significant transformation of their identities, breaking away from such strong institutions and traditions as family, politics and religion.

Works by Stefano Arienti, Vanessa Beecroft, Simone Berti, Lina Bertucci, Marco Boggio Sella, Maurizio Cattelan, Giuseppe Gabellone, Luisa Lambri, Margherita Manzelli, Diego Perrone, Paola Pivi e Grazia Toderi show how the artist and the contemporary individual, in breaking away from the old bonds, have to face the issue of their own autonomy, independently, but also alone. Faced with his or her own image, the individual sees the reflection of a chain of visions that will create new connections with the world.

Whilst in the past, the bonds with family ties, political party or religion would offer a direction and a clear expressive protection, today everything depends on how much force the individual is able to project upon an ever-broadening society.

These twelve artists give examples of how the language of contemporary art can define not only new aesthetic rules, but also offer profound reflections both on personal relationships and on those with the world surrounding them.

Bringing this show to Japan entails comparing two distant worlds which know little about each other, but which, however indirectly, nevertheless resemble each other.

The Japanese visitor will find in the work of famous and less famous Italian artists such as Vanessa Beecroft and Maurizio Cattelan or Lina Bertucci, Luisa Lambri, Diego Perrone and Margherita Manzelli surprising perspectives that offer insights into their own world, which has also undergone profound transformation and is poised to embrace the languages of the new millennium.

The intimate spaces of Hara Museum will emphasize the contents of each work which has been specifically chosen to relate directly to the architecture of the museum.
