Since its inception, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l’Arte has aimed at providing a vantage point, from which to observe the most interesting and unique trends in international contemporary art. With the exhibitions it has organized, in particular Campo 95 and Campo 6, the Foundation has gotten to the heart of the debate that is stirring in the art system these years. With Guarene Arte 97 we aim at continuing our exploration of contemporary art. Therefore, it is on the occasion of the opening day of Guarene Arte 97 that the prizes will be awarded, Premio Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Premio Regione Piemonte, which have reached the second edition. These prizes are an expression of the will to promote the most innovative art research on an international level.
Premio Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo is assigned to the most interesting work, and Premio Regione Piemonte to the best project, to be carried out and included in the regional collections. This formula rewards both finished works and projects, creating the possibility to compare realized and imagined creativity. This is what has happened with the project by Tobias Rehberger (winner of Premio Regione Piemonte 1996), whose final result is presented as part of Guarene Arte 97. The 8 artists of different nationalities who are participating in the prize exhibition this year were selected by leading figures of the international art world: Jean Christophe Amman, Director of Frankfurt's Museum of Modern Art, suggested Martin Neumaier. Kate Bush, Director of London's ICA, suggested Keith Tyson. Richard Flood, Curator at the Walker Art Center of Minneapolis, suggested Robert Fischer. Jaap Guldemond, Curator of the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum of Eindhoven, suggested Mark Madera. Lars Nittve, Director of the Lousiana Museum of Humlebaek, suggested Simone Aaberg Kaern. Hans Ulrich Obrist, Curator of the Muséè d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, suggested Urs Fischer. Art critic Angela Vettese suggested Simone Berti. Art critic Octavio Zaya suggested Txuspo Poyo.
An authoritative international jury formed by the curator of Barcelona's Museu d’Art Contemporani, José Lebrero Stals, Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, and the curator of the Video Centre Pompidou of Paris, Christine Van Assche, assigned the prize, Premio Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, to Italian artist Simone Berti for best work presented at the exhibition, and Premio Regione Piemonte to Dutch artist Mark Manders for best project to be developed and then included in the regional art collections.
With the opening of this exhibiting space in Guarene d’Alba, the town that hosts Guarene Arte 97, we aimed at creating a new meeting point, a debate center for artists, personalities of the art world, and the public, with the purpose of contributing to the development and spread of contemporary art.
