The exhibition introduces a selection of the first half of the Italian contemporary photography collection, and exhibits the images of 15 photographers, which form a chronological path dividing into several areas, each devoted to a participating author.
The formal precision of the images from the early 1940s is documented by the work of Giuseppe Cavalli. The exhibition includes works by Pasquale De Antonis and Antonio Migliori that exemplify the age of abstraction and informal art during the 1950s. The images of Ugo Mulas mirror the atmosphere of the Milan suburbs in the post-WWII period, while Ferdinando Scianna's works constitute one of the most important anthropological documents in the history of Italian photography. Gabriele Basilico's portraits of factories are documents of industrial archaeology, just like the photographs of Guido Guidi offer an insight into the experimental evolution of the author, from the archetypes of popular architecture in the Romagna region to the most recent images of the abandoned industrial areas of Porto Marghera. The early works of Vincenzo Castella reproduce portraits of interiors that belong to an inner landscape. We could not forget to include the landscapes of Mario Giacomelli, the city portraits of Luigi Ghirri, a selection of works by Mimmo Jodice, unpublished work by Giorgio Avigdor, and Nanda Lanfranco's Arcani series. A section of the collection is dedicated to emerging authors Turi Rapisarda, William Guerrieri, Luisa Lambri and Raffaella Mariniello.
"Photography is an art form that appears to have no texture - hence it seems to strip matter of all sensuality, and privilege the recording of purely visual facts. In fact, it is the very non-materiality of photography that fascinates me and attracts me even more, guiding me in my search for new authors, who have the ability to modulate and set to vibrate the silence of its materials". (Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo)
