Opere dalla Collezione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo
The Italian based contemporary art foundation Sandretto Re Rebaudengo presents major works from its internationally acclaimed collection, as part of the Hellenic Festival programme from 18 June to 31 July at the Benaki Museum, Athens, Greece.
The exhibition, entitled Contemporary Monuments 1981-2008, is the result of a welcomed invitation by Yorgos Loukos, Chairman of the Athens Festival, and Angelos Delivorrias, Director of the Benaki museum, to Collector and President of the arts foundation that bears her name, Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, to show works from her collection as part of the festival’s main programme.
Contemporary Monuments 1981-2008, works from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection, brings together 29 major contemporary art works by 23 of today’s hottest artists on the international contemporary art scene: Maurizio Cattelan, Flavio Favelli, Katharina Fritsch, Giuseppe Gabellone, Isa Genzken, Liam Gillick, Douglas Gordon, Lothar Hempel, Thomas Hirschhorn, Jim Isermann, Sarah Lucas, Cady Noland, Tobias Rehberger, David Robbins, Bojan Sarcevic, Yinka Shonibare, Rosemarie Trockel, Nobuko Tsuchiya, Patrick Tuttofuoco, Piotr Uklanski, Richard Wentworth, Pae White and Rachel Whiteread.
Selected from the internationally acclaimed Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection, the powerful impact of these sculptures, which are made from highly contrasting materials, question our view of reality and serve as a metaphoric representation of the world in which we live. Unforgettable works commenting on social transformations such as Maurizio Cattelan’s squirrel suicide and Thomas Hirschorn’s antiwar monument contrast with the refined, reflective formality of Tobias Rehberger’s vases, while the delicate works created by the young Bojan Sarcevic enter into dialogue with Sarah Lucas’ ironic representation of sexuality on an outsized egg and Yinka Shonibare’s dummies and the insights they offer into the absurdities of racial stereotypes.
