Stellare Prize

StellaRe is the name of the prize that the contemporary art foundation Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo set up in 2006, to honour women all over the world who strive to make a difference to contemporary society through their innovative work, dedication and ideas, paying particular attention to the complex cultural, political and economic strategies that shape contemporary society.

Franca Sozzani, editor in chief of Vogue Italia, was awarded the StellaRe prize in the first edition in 2006 for her greatly innovative communication strategies; in the second edition in 2007 the prize was awarded to H.E. Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, the Minister of Economy of the United Arab Emirates and also the first woman to take up a governmental position in her country. For the third edition in 2008, the Prize was awarded to Lisa Phillips for her celebrated contribution to contemporary art, her outstanding career as a curator and for her incredible leadership as director of the New Museum in New York. In 2009, the StellaRe Prize went to the acclaimed architect Kazuyo Sejima for her highly innovative approach to modern day architecture.
Franca Sozzani gave birth to a new way of communication and thoroughly changed the language of fashion. Under her editorship Vogue Italia has become one of the most influential fashion magazines internationally, as a style bible and an essential instrument in order to find one’s position in relation to fictitious contemporary culture.

H.E. Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi was able to deal with a traditional society which is bound to laws still enforcing limits.
She has distinguished herself for her commitment and prominent career. Consequently she has become the first woman in the history of the Federation of the Arab Emirates to direct a Ministry.

The StellaRe Prize is an exclusively designed ring, made by the world renowned Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Its design is based on that of a traditional engagement ring, with a 5 cm diameter making it a larger, rather unique version. The ring design is also exclusively remodelled by the artist each year and features a carefully crafted diamond, reflecting the star symbol of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo.
The StellaRe Circle was set up in 2006 to award the StellaRe Prize each year. It was  Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo herself who had the idea of forming a heterogeneous group of women to work with this ambitious project dedicated to women, to their identities and roles in life, to their value in the new millennium.  And, it is the exclusive StellaRe ring that unites the winners of the Prize to the StellaRe Circle.
In addition to Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, the current members of the circle are: Franca Coin, Alberta Ferretti, Maria Luisa Frisa, Laura Gucci, Martina Mondadori, Giulia Puri, Franca Sozzani (joining the circle as winner of the 2006 edition), Warly Tomei, Francesca Tronchetti Provera, H.E. Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi (joining the club as winner of the 2007 edition). The circle forms a nucleus of equals who are committed to developing a transnational group of individuals from all walks of life, whose different strengths and talents will go towards forming new ideas and projects for the future.
